Why it matters
The enquiry that came in while you were fitting
A homeowner spends a fortnight looking at kitchens and then, at half past eight on a Wednesday, decides to ask three companies for a price.
You're on a job until six and doing quotes at nine. The other two have a contact form each. Yours answers her, explains that a fitted price needs a measure, tells her the lead time from your own pages, and books the survey.
She hasn't got a price yet. She has got an appointment, which is the only thing that was ever going to produce one.

Example conversation
A kitchen enquiry at half eight
- How much for a new kitchen? I saw 30% off this month on your site.
Price and the offer, in one message
- A fitted kitchen is priced off the actual room, so the figure comes from the measure rather than from me. The measure is free. What sort of size is the kitchen, and whereabouts are you?
No fitted price, and no repeating the discount as a reason to hurry
- Medium, in Harrogate. Do I need to order before the end of the month to get the 30%?
- I'd rather not put a deadline on an offer when I could get it wrong, so the team will confirm exactly what applies. Do you own the property? And what's your name and the best number?
Never invents a deadline, and asks the question that qualifies the lead
- Yes we own it. Ruth Iyer, 555-0166. And if your salesman comes round and I sign, how long have I got to cancel?
- Cancellation rights depend on how and where a contract is signed, so that's one for the contract and the team rather than a figure from me. They'll go through it with you at the measure.

What customers ask
What homeowners ask before they book a measure
- How much for a new kitchen?
- Do you come out and measure for free?
- How long from order to fitting?
- What guarantee do I get?
- Can I come and see them in a showroom?
- Do you work in my area?
- Do you offer finance?
- Do I need planning permission for this?
It answers these from your own website, and hands over any it can't.
What it does
What it does for you
Explains why a fitted price needs a measure
Then offers the measure and takes the details, rather than inventing a per-window or per-kitchen figure that the survey will contradict.
Never manufactures urgency
No today-only price, no offer that expires when the surveyor leaves, no limited number of installations. If your site publishes an offer, the team confirms what applies rather than the chat putting a clock on it.
Asks whether they own the property
A tenant can't order replacement windows. Finding out on the website saves the appointment that was never going to convert.
Books the survey
Through your booking page, or real free times from Google Calendar, with the lead texted to you either way.
Rules it follows
Selling and claim rules it follows
No fitted price, no discount figure
It quotes only what your website publishes for exactly what was asked. A fitted price depends on the actual opening, room or floor, and it says so rather than offering a range.
No urgency you haven't published
It never says a price is good today only, expires with the surveyor's visit, needs signing on the night, or applies to a limited number of installations. A price that exists only during a sales visit is precisely the practice this rule keeps the assistant out of.
No cancellation deadlines
It never states a deadline or says whether a contract can be cancelled. A sale agreed at the customer's home for $25 or more carries a federal three-business-day right to cancel under 16 CFR 429, states add their own windows, and the exclusions turn on how the deal was made. It points at the contract and your team.
No payment, rate, deposit or term
It gives no monthly payment, interest rate, deposit or finance charge, even one your website publishes. Under Regulation Z, naming any of those requires the annual percentage rate and the full repayment terms alongside, which your website can carry and a chat cannot.
Permissions are not its call
It never says whether work needs a permit, planning permission, building control or a party wall agreement, and never says what a landlord, freeholder or management company will allow.
No energy or savings claims
It never says a product will cut a bill by an amount, pay for itself, or meet an energy rating, beyond your website's own words. Those are substantiation claims and a chat has nothing to substantiate them with.
Lead times and guarantees as published
It states lead times, fitting durations, guarantees, insurance-backed guarantees, licence numbers and trade body membership only as your website states them.

Questions
Common questions
Our site advertises 30% off. Why won't it push that?
It'll answer from your pages, but it won't turn the offer into a deadline of its own: no 'order by Friday', no 'the price goes when the surveyor leaves'. Those are the pressure tactics that home improvement selling has a reputation for, and a chatbot inventing one on your behalf is a complaint waiting to happen.
Why won't it say how long someone has to cancel?
Because it can't know which rule applies. The federal three-day right covers sales agreed at the home above $25, states layer their own windows on top, and the exclusions turn on how and where the contract was signed. It points at the contract and your team rather than stating a number that might be wrong.
We publish finance from a monthly figure. Will it repeat that?
No. Under Regulation Z, stating a monthly payment, a deposit, a number of payments or a finance charge means the APR and the full repayment terms must appear with it. Your website carries those disclosures; a chat message can't, so it hands finance questions to your team.
Will it give a price per window?
Only if your website publishes one for exactly what they asked. Otherwise it says a fitted price comes off the actual opening and offers the free measure, which is what produces a real number anyway.
Can it tell someone whether they need planning permission?
No. It never says work does or doesn't need a permit, planning permission or building control, and never speaks for a landlord or a freeholder. It takes the details and lets someone who can check answer.
Does it ask whether they own the place?
Yes, and it's one of the most useful things on the lead. A tenant can't order replacement windows, so knowing before the surveyor's van is booked saves a wasted slot.
Can it book the measure into our diary?
Yes. It sends homeowners to your booking page, or offers real free times from your Google Calendar, and texts you the lead either way.
